Tim Berners-Lee

The Man Who Invented the Web

Tim Berners-Lee is a British computer scientist. In 1989, he invented the World Wide Web. He was working at a big science lab called CERN in Switzerland. The web is a way to share pages of information using computers.

To build the web, Tim created three important tools. HTML is the language used to make web pages. A URL is the address that tells you where a page lives. HTTP is the set of rules for sending pages from one computer to another. Tim also wrote the very first web browser and the first web server.

In 1993, Tim and CERN gave the web away for free. Anyone in the world could use it without paying. This helped the web grow very fast. Today, billions of people use the web that Tim invented.
